WELLSVILLE — Friday night’s Wellsville vs. Southern Local football game, which normally is one of the most attended games of the season, was designed as an Ohio High School Athletic Association monitoring site.

According to Wellsville school Superintendent Richard Bereschek, the purpose of the visit was to evaluate how effectively the district is complying with COVID-19 protocol as established by the Ohio Department of Health. Wellsville schools received an all-passing grade in the 39 different categories. In addition to staggered spectator seating, the OHSAA inspector checklist included facial coverings on all parties, social distancing at all time except on the court, limited sideline contact, no spectators on the field, frequent sanitation of all high-touch areas and maintenance of one-way ingress and egress into the facility.

“A lot of hard work and preparation has gone into a successful opening of school and sports,” Bereschek explained, adding that school officials had just learned about the visit the day of the game. “We were ready regardless.” School board member John Richard Morrow was thrilled with the results and credits the staff. “This administration, (Bereschek) and staff have done a marvelous job getting the schools ready to reopen. The athletic director, gymnasium and stadium staff have been great at getting the facilities ready for our athletes to complete.”
